Martina B. Rivers is a Spokane, Washington-based author of fantasy and romantasy, primarily focusing her time on her series The Legends of Cyconis.
This fantasy world offers an escape into the vast and diverse realms of humans, elves, dwarves and more. To the west: the Shardian Waters. To the east: the Sterling Ocean. From the uncharted lands of the southern hemisphere, to the unexplored waters on the back of the globe where exists an unknown island that is home to the Andrili, a gray-skinned, death-worshipping people of witches and warlocks. Then, there's the the icy region of Dies Isla in the Far North, mysterious to most.
The core of The Legends of Cyconis series takes place in the land centered on this map in the kingdoms of Kildore, Nateet, and Freasi – the three nations ruled by humans. North of these lands and connecting the continents is the Diresha Realm, one of three realms ruled by the Eldei, crudely referred to as elves. To the southwest is Wesserland, vast highland deserts and grasslands with the Great Canyon cutting miles wide and deep through the landscape and where the Great Lake is held back by an ancient dam on which the city-state of Wesser is built. It is here the last of the dwarves who once ruled over Wesserland live, quietly plotting in the city's underbelly to reclaim what was once theirs. It is in Wesserland that The Treasures of the Clan takes place.
Whatever Davan wants, Treasta makes sure he gets.
So when the thief-king puts up an irresistible offer, she agrees to partner with Davan on a mission to steal a legendary flute cursed to turn its player to gold. Setting out on a monthslong journey, Treasta and Davan find themselves in direct competition with their fellow guildmates. Then, they meet Chimes, a nomad well-versed in the wintertouched highlands and temperate lowlands of the Great Canyon, who has agreed to be their escort. Davan sees Chimes' kindness as a threat, and with an already faltering relationship, the growing tension between him and Treasta culminates in abandonment. Now, Treasta is determined to nab the bounty for herself. But things become complicated with Chimes as her guide: a romance buds between them, secrets are revealed, and Treasta's failing physical and mental health are spiraling out of control.
Meanwhile, fellow guildmate Elsie also wants the flute, and after Davan and Treasta leave her to die in a blaze, she becomes hellbent on revenge. Then, she meets Declan, a deaf twelve-year-old boy who comes from an abusive home that mirrors her own childhood, and she finds herself overcome with instinct to protect and care for him. After a warlock kidnaps Declan, Elsie must abandon her quest and reluctantly help Davan who holds the key to saving the boy. Except, Davan has one more demand before he’ll reveal what he knows: Someone must die.
